Swagger Man

I see this morning that “The Saints had swagger even before wins started piling up,” and I can’t bear to read the article.  It’s that word swagger.  Sports writers love it.  I don’t hear a lot of sports fans talk up the importance of one having a swagger, so I assume it’s just a matter of sports writers having to come up with content when games happen only once a week.  But let’s take a moment to consider swagger.

Sports writers seem to go with the Urban Dictionary usage:

How one presents him or her self to the world. Swagger is shown from how the person handles a situation. It can also be shown in the person’s walk.

and not Merriam-Webster’s:

1 : to conduct oneself in an arrogant or superciliously pompous manner; especially : to walk with an air of overbearing self-confidence

Even accepting the Urban Dictionary usage, isn’t this all part of masculine over-confidence?  Intimidation and hubris?  Childishness?  Gloating pomposity?  Isn’t it the kind of thing bad winners do?

Screw it, I’m going out there and swagger my way through the day.  Why?  Because I’m a self absorbed and unforgiving  ass kicker.  And people gotta know.
